pLEDss Is Built for Large Areas

Built for large-area testing since its inception by NASA over a decade ago, pLEDss tests large panels using hundreds of pLEDss heads working together on circuits up to several square meters in area.

  • pLEDss heads work together to scale to any size area.
  • Many flash lamp large-area simulators cannot meet industry standard spatial nonuniformity above ~1 square meter.
  • Other simulator heads cannot work together to make a uniform beam.
    • pLEDss' unique spatial control allows neighboring heads to work in unison.
      • Multiple heads are calibrated together at the factory to produce even better performance.

Large Area Testing for Multi-Junction Cells

  • pLEDss provides metrics for each junction of a multi-junction cell.
  • Leverage the spectral adjustability of pLEDss to test up to six-junction cells.
  • Calibrate against isotypes for industry standard, peak performance.

pLEDss Provides Uniformity and Scalability

A single LED produces a non-uniform beam across the solar cells.

A. A single LED produces a non-uniform beam across the solar cells.

Many LEDs at equal outputs produce a non-uniform beam across the solar cells.

B. Many LEDs at equal outputs produce a non-uniform beam across the solar cells.

Many factory-calibrated LEDs produce a uniform beam across the solar cells.

C. Many factory-calibrated LEDs produce a uniform beam across the solar cells.

Many factory calibrated LED heads produce a uniform beam across arbitrarily large areas.

D. Many factory calibrated LED heads produce a uniform beam across arbitrarily large areas.

Helping Take NASA to the Moon: The Largest pLEDss Yet

NASA's Lunar Gateway will provide astronauts with an orbital outpost on the moon. The space station needs to meet NASA’s highest standards for capability and reliability, and the agency has selected pLEDss to test the Gateway’s solar arrays. This will be the largest pLEDss ever.

  • 5.77 m x 0.54 m provides over 3.1 sq. meters of AM0 illumination per circuit, with over 50 circuits per wing.
  • Capable of testing up to six-junction cells.
  • Better than industry-standard Class A solar simulation metrics across any area.
